3. When can my child start to play interclub?
In North Taranaki, there are a variety of Interclub Grades starting off with the fun introductory Orange Grade Interclub played on a 3 quarter court on Fridays after school at 3.30pm from the end of October until end of March during school terms.
Children often start Interclub around 8yrs of age once they have mastered some of the basics of the game (serving and forehand at a minimum) however one can start playing at any age after that!

Our coaches will assess your child and advise you. Main goal is to get children having fun and adding to their learning by playing and not getting too hung up about competencies. Interclub is there to continue the fun and the learning!
Making up Interclub teams involve a balancing act of numerous factors, with the child's best interest in mind. All are considered among when deciding which grade to play and the make up the final teams. We do our best to balance it all out so that all children can have a great overall experience. Aim is for children to love tennis! |
Interclub involves 4 children playing, a game of singles and doubles, and they play in order of ability. Number 1 in a team plays against opposite number 1 and so on. In the introductory Orange Grade Interclub tennis is played on a 3 quarter court, with simplified rules, where children can do a bounce serve on the second serve instead of an overhand serve, plus the format is simplified and shorter, etc - all aimed for the child to play and have fun through learning.
In the 4 member team introductory Orange Grade, our club sometimes have 5 or 6 children per team with a rotation policy, especially for teams with younger team members in their first season. Aim is for them to get a taste of the tennis fun. Otherwise, teams have 4 team members committed to playing each week.
Once a child starts playing Interclub, children continue to improve as they get to practice the skills they learn in their coaching groups and get double the tennis fun each week! Aim is for children to love tennis! Tennis is a game for life!
